Dementia, including Alzheimer's disease (F01, F03, G30) was the second leading underlying cause of death in Australia in 2014. The number of deaths due to this cause has increased by 32.9% over the past five years, from 9,003 in 2010 to 11,965 in 2014. Unspecified dementia (F03) and Alzheimer's disease (G30), have increased by 1,986 (38.5%) and 929 (34.3%) deaths, respectively, since 2010, and in combination account for almost all of the increase (98.4%) observed in Dementia, including Alzheimer's disease (F01, F03, G30) deaths when compared with 2010.

Dementia, including Alzheimer's disease accounted for 11,965 deaths or 7.8% of all deaths in Australia. The sex ratio for deaths due to this cause was 52 male deaths per 100 female deaths. Table 2.6 shows the total number of deaths by sex due to Dementia, including Alzheimer's disease from 2010-2014.

In the five years from 2010 to 2014, the proportion of deaths due to Ischaemic heart diseases (I20-I25) has decreased from 15.1% to 13.1%, while the proportion of Cerebrovascular diseases (I60-I69) has decreased from 7.8% to 7.0%. Over the same period, the proportion of deaths due to Dementia, including Alzheimer's disease (F01, F03, G30) has increased from 6.3% to 7.8%. This change in leading causes is illustrated in the graph below.
